Unfortunately I didn’t take any before pictures of this, mainly because the basic layout and
groundwork was already in place. The original patio was just a mass of concrete so naturally
the simplest thing to do was to bed the new directly onto the old. A large part of the task was
to source a slab semi-circle as near as possible to the size of the existing concrete and also
calculate a random pattern for the other slabs to fit neatly into the rest. The bigger problem,
however, was the levels since the large rectangle sloped away from the conservatory and the
outer edge of the 4.5 meter semi-circle sloped towards it giving the whole thing a ‘V’ shaped
playing surface with a difference of almost 10cm from the outer edges to the ‘V’ groove: the
finished patio had to be perfectly level. As you can see from the pictures the whole thing also
extended around the side of the conservatory and there was a semi-circular barbecue that had
to be accommodated.
