This was our first full project from initial design, through the build stage and on to the finished garden.
The site sloped down from the top left corner to the bottom right with an overall height difference of
over two feet. Most of the slope was disguised by constructing a large deck area across the back fence
and the lawn was terraced to accommodate the slope over the rest of the garden. A large pond was also
wanted but would have dominated the centre of the garden, likewise the wide flower beds would have
been too overwhelming. To combat all of this we allowed elements of the garden to ‘share’ areas by
Overlapping each other and thereby giving the impression of more space.
A view from a bedroom
window shows how little
there was in the original
garden.
The pond was the first
structure to be built...

gallery for more pictures.
Then the decking could
overlap the pond giving
easy access to the pump
by lifting two short planks.
With the deck complete
the next job was to stain
and treat the pergola. The
grey boxes on the fence
are electrical sockets.
Time to construct the patio
and path that would define
the two lawn areas and
terrace the overall slope
of the garden.
Once all the hardcore
had been packed down
we could cement in the
stone slabs, trimming off
the corners at 45 degrees
Raised beds were also
put in and edged with
decking to match the
sides of the pond.
We put one either side to
balance the whole garden.
This picture was taken
some time after the plants
had become established
And here is the finished
design with a 2-tiered
lawn, an entertainment
deck, seating area and
a pond for the wildlife
A view of the deck from
the seating area looking
over the pond. Climbing
plants soon made their
way up the pergola.
