Walsall Pond
The pond we constructed in Walsall formed part of a complete garden makeover,
but because the final design had the decking extending over the pond we felt it was
necessary to finish the pond first and then build the deck over the top. To be able
to trim the liner the pond also had to be filled with water at this stage since this
would not have been possible after the decking was completed. To ‘tie’ the pond
into the overall design we edged it with decking.

It’s always better to
have a clear space to
start with, that way you
can visualise the final
project more easily.
After marking out the
digging begins... what
a pity we hit solid rock
about this stage.
Once the earth was
excavated the walls
could be constructed
using breeze blocks.
The finished construction
was then rendered to
smooth off the surfaces
and back-filled with
concrete for strength.
In order to protect the
heavy-duty polythene
we first lined the sides
with loft insulation since
the use of sand would
not have been feasible.
And then sat back for
three hours or so while
it filled with water.
The rest of the garden
might not be finished,
but the pond certainly
looks good enough
for some fish.
